Are you seeing odd signs from your toilet? Does it take a long time to refill, or you’re seeing large amounts of leaks? In this case, usually one of the biggest culprits is the toilet fill valve. It is a device that controls the flow of fresh water into your toilet tank. It usually extends to the bottom of the tank and attaches to a supply tube. The toilet fill valve opens and closes with each flush. Just like other valves in many other devices, it wears out over time and has to be replaced. With the right instructions, replacing the toilet fill valve can be quite easy, but if you don’t have the time for this or simply don’t want to handle it, you can always call professional plumbers at New Era Plumbing & Septic.

Purchase the New Valve

Of course, before starting, you need to purchase a replacement fill valve that is the same type as the old one. Most of the time, you can find it in your local hardware store and get a new toilet fill valve that matches your old one. Most new toilet fill valves are universal, which means they will fit in nearly any toilet.

Switch Off The Water Supply Valve

Find the water supply valve behind the toilet tank and turn it clockwise. We advise you to flush first, and then, with the help of a cloth or a sponge, get the remaining water in the bottom. Also, shutting off the main water valve is a good idea; you wouldn’t want anyone to use water during this time.

Remove the Old Valve

Disconnect the water supply from the tank's fill valve. You may want to use pliers.  Loosen the locknut that holds the fill valve to the tank's bottom. Then remove the old valve. Place a plastic bucket or bin under the nut to collect any leaking water. This process can cause some water spillage. Place the old fill valve inside the bin and collect any water that spills out after you remove it from the tank.

New Valve Installation

Take your new fill valve, read the manufacturer instructions clearly, and then set the height. Insert the base of the fill valve into the tank's bottom hole, secure it beneath the tank, and tighten it, but be careful not to overtighten. Finally, connect the hose to the valve stem and turn on the water supply valve. After installing the replacement fill valve, it's time to restart the water flow. Connect the supply line to the new fill valve and tighten it.
