Septic tanks are an essential part of rural and off-grid living, responsible for providing a reliable means of wastewater treatment. However, like any system, they are not immune to issues. There are many threats that can disrupt the septic tank’s functionality. In this brief article brought to you by New Era Plumbing, we’ll explore 5 common causes of septic tank problems. We’ll also share some tips on reducing the risks of such issues.

Cause 1: Overloading the System

Overloading the septic system occurs when excessive water is introduced into the tank, overwhelming its capacity to separate solids from liquids. This can result from excessive water use, such as running multiple appliances simultaneously, long showers, or leaking fixtures.
Install water-saving fixtures and appliances to reduce water consumption, fix any water leaks in your home promptly, and spread out water use throughout the day to avoid overwhelming the system.

Cause 2: Inadequate Septic Tank Maintenance

Neglecting regular septic tank maintenance, including septic cleaning and septic tank pumping, can lead to solid waste accumulation, clogging, and inefficient bacterial breakdown of waste. Severe neglect can even lead to a system failure. Avoid flushing non-biodegradable items or chemicals into the system and remember to schedule septic tank pumping once every 3 to 5 years in order to remove accumulated waste. Periodically have the septic system cleaned to remove grime and buildup which can lead to blockages and poor efficiency.

Cause 3: Tree Root Infiltration

Tree roots will naturally stretch out in their search for water and hydration. Sadly, tree roots seeking water can infiltrate septic system pipes and damage them, leading to blockages and, in severe cases, a system failure.
Plant trees away from the septic system and drainage field, and regularly inspect and maintain the septic tank area to identify root intrusion early. For premium protection, install root barriers to deter root growth toward the system.

Cause 4: High Soil Water Table

A high water table, especially during rainy seasons, can saturate the soil around the septic system, preventing efficient wastewater absorption. Avoid water-intensive activities during wet periods and consult a septic professional to assess and potentially raise the drain field to prevent saturation.

Cause 5: Harsh Chemicals and Non-Biodegradable Items

Harsh chemicals, grease, and non-biodegradable items flushed into the septic system can disrupt the natural breakdown of waste and damage system components. Chemicals can threaten helpful bacteria, and non-biodegradable items can prematurely fill the septic tank.
Avoid using chemical drain cleaners that can harm the septic bacteria and use septic-safe toilet paper and household products. Further, avoid pouring used fats, oils, and greases down the kitchen sink. Dispose of them in the trash instead.
